New DREAM Hubs for Marikina and Rizal

With our goal to reach out to more Filipino children, KIDS Club Philippines and Silid Aralan (SAI) welcome new learners to our hubs in Marikina and Rizal last 4 November 2017. The two hubs are our new addition under our DREAM Hub Project. Each hub shall cater to about 100 low-performing students from Grades 1 and 2.  Through the hub and SAI Programme, we hope that  the learners will develop their passion for learning; have the motivation to pursue their life goals; and be an inspiration to others.

Despite the rainy weather last Saturday, the SAI KIDS Team visited San Isidro Labrador Elementary School in Rodriguez, Rizal and Nangka Elemetary School in Marikina City to set-up and officially open the DREAM Hubs. But all the challenges paid off when they saw the excitement of the learners.

Barangay San Isidro in Rodriguez, Rizal is known because of Avilon Zoo and Noah’s Park. Two recreational facilities which are popular for school trips and group tours. But outside these facilities is a community that is struggling with a lot of urban challenges – poverty, unemployment, high risk from natural disasters, to name a few. And  like other urban cities, Marikina is not an exemption to  the increasing population concern due to its proximity to bigger cities like Quezon City, Makati, and Manila. Along the Marikina River especially in Barangay Nangka, the number of slum dwellers increases every year. And with jobs getting more difficult to secure, most of these families have difficulties providing for their basic needs. These circumstances greatly influence the ability of the family, the community, and the local government to provide a safe and balanced learning environment for the children.

We were honored to have Mr. Ruel Vergel de Dios, the school principal, during the Opening Ceremony and Ribbon-Cutting.  Similar to the other hubs, there are three areas where the learners can enjoy reading books; play with different toys; and create some arts and crafts.
